Biography

Jian Pei is the Arthur S. Pearse Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at Duke University, where he also serves as Chair of the Department of Computer Science in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences. Additionally, he holds professorships in Biostatistics & Bioinformatics in the School of Medicine and Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Pratt School of Engineering.

Pei earned his Ph.D. in Computing Science from Simon Fraser University in 2002.  Prior to joining Duke University in July 2022, he was a professor at Simon Fraser University and SUNY Buffalo.

Renowned for his contributions to data science, Pei’s research encompasses data mining, databases, information retrieval, computational statistics, and applied machine learning and AI. He has published over 300 research papers and is one of the most cited authors in his fields.

Pei’s work has been recognized with several prestigious honors. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

In addition to his academic roles, Pei has industry experience. His algorithms have been adopted by industry and implemented in open-source software suites.

At Duke, Pei teaches courses in data science and continues to advance research in data mining and its applications across various disciplines.
